28 February 2018 - With a view to more efficient application of the European Court of Human Rights' standards established in judgments Zahirović vs. Croatia, Lonić vs. Croatia and Arps vs. Croatia concerning the right of accused persons to participate in appellate proceedings, Professor Ksenija Turković, Judge of the European Court of Human Rights, invited by President Dr Šeparović, gave a lecture at the Constitutional Court to the Constitutional Court judges and legal advisors. Judge Turković clarified the views of the European Court of Human Rights expressed in the abovementioned cases and also made reference to other relevant case-law of this Court concerning the fair trial in criminal cases and the right of the accused to defend himself/herself in person (Article 6 paras 1 and 3 point c) of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms). She also highlighted the importance of taking into account the entire case-law of the European Court of Human Rights and not only the cases related to the Republic of Croatia.
